The understanding a midwife has, is primarily oriented on physiology. The understanding contains the knowledge that the whole spectrum of motherhood, from conception through pregnancy, post-natal bed-rest and breast-feeding periods are causal facts of life and that women can handle these phases under their own steam.
The relationship between a woman and her midwife is essential for good and successful support; this is entered into as a partnership with two equal partners. The birthing mother is the central person in the support process; her individual needs, values and beliefs being respected by the midwife. This process can consistently be designed, understood and evaluated on the model of the midwifery process.
A midwife has received recognised, appropriate specialist training, in which the traditions, knowledge and the art of midwifery is imparted. The midwife has acquired the necessary qualifications in order to practice within legal bounds. Furthermore, scientifically based knowledge and practical skills must be continuously advanced and updated throughout the course of a working life.
