As an international student you can choose modules out of 3 degree programmes focusing on design, media and art: MultiMediaTechnology, MultiMediaArt and Design and Product Management.

MultiMediaArt offers two international modules in English every term (fall and spring) for incoming exchange students:

The  language of  tuition at MultiMediaArt  is mainly German. English support such as course literature (digital and analogue) as well as individual support from MultiMediaArt lecturers and fellow students will be provided in English to successfully meet all requirements for the different courses.

Fall Term (Semester 1 and 3):

Introduction to Film and Studio

Course contents:
Communicating fundamental knowledge regarding basic technologies of existing AV equipment of the university of applied sciences: HDV video cameras, basics regarding lighting (HMI, artificial light) and TV studios, basics regarding cinematic resolution and design possibilities, state-of-the-art technology and trends that are applied to modern studio and AV productions on the free market. The course finishes with its own small film project that is prepared and presented in selected teams.

Introduction to Audio

Course contents:
Communicating the basic theoretical principles and methods of current computer-based production tools of audio processing, basic acoustic principles, and electronic (analogue and digital) equivalents. Photography Introduction

Course contents:
History of photography and its meaning in the specific aesthetic and content-related context of a visually oriented information society. Meaning of the photographic image in its cultural-historical development. Its effects and development with regard to painting, fine arts, and moving images. Understanding of the conflicting relationship with regard to the meaning of photography as a picture of reality and a form of art. In the theoretical part, students prove their understanding of theories relating to photographic history and their connection to the artistic-aesthetic practice of photography in the form of a written paper (essay or written exam). The written paper shows that the students have understood the connection between the artistic-aesthetic design of a photograph and its content-related meaning in the context of the cultural history of photography. Communicating fundamental knowledge of the technology and design of digital photography, and communicating fundamental skills in dealing with cameras, lighting, exposure with a focus on digital photography; communicating fundamental aesthetics in dealing with photographic images, brainstorming, creative conceptual design, and photographic realisation. The practical part ends with presentation of a photographic project (exhibition).

Concept Development

Course contents:
Communicating fundamental knowledge and techniques regarding subject selection, brainstorming and using these to present and develop a concept that communicates the idea in a way appropriate for the platform. Communicating the fundamental skills for developing design ideas as part of advertising campaigns, viral marketing, image or guerrilla campaigns, and as part of innovative ideas for conventional and emerging media. Creative problem solving, critical reflection of the students’ own environment, and concepts of media design oriented towards content for different platforms such as online, film, print, game, TV, and installation. The course ends with the professional presentation of a communication concept prepared in selected teams.

Photographic & Cinematic Documentation 1

Course contents:
Deepening of technical and aesthetic skills in dealing with digital and analogue SLR cameras and their workflow. Dealing with professional photographic equipment, such as DSL Canon Eos 5D Mark II (or later models), analogue cinematic development and reproduction. Applying and deepening this practice in the area of moving images using professional digital film equipment. Practically establishing the similarities and differences of the two areas, both from a technical as well as artistic point of view. Combination of advanced, technical skills with the creative design of photo and film concepts with a focus on documentary content. Communicating photographic and cinematic modes of expression: transmitting the students’ own environment into aesthetic, photographic imagery through reflection. Introduction to the combination of photographic and cinematic narration, differences, similarities and possibilities of documentary work. Theoretical introduction to the topic based on the analysis of historical and contemporary examples (e.g. the international documentary photo agency MAGNUM). Creating a photographic-cinematic concept and its professional implementation.

Course contents:
Communicating the ability to create character rigs for different levels of difficulty (biped, quadruped, diverse equipment), development of new solutions and predefined off-the-shelf technologies. Applying and expanding knowledge from the "Animation Fundamentals" course using objects or diverse animation tools. Creating effects animations with the aid of diverse dynamics technologies such as rigid bodies, soft bodies, particles; identifying the special characteristics when it comes to dealing with and outputting simulation-based animation methods, and possibilities of rendering different effects technologies.

Compositing

Sound Synthesis 1

Mis en Scene

Course contents:
Communicating complex knowledge of staging making use of manifold creative possibilities for directors and cameramen in order to perform a (scripted) scene as it was intended. Expansion of the knowledge of the individual factors of mise-en-scène such as light design, set design, directing actors, costumes, make-up as well as camera style and movement, image design and the dynamics of a scene. In-depth skills in creativity and technology management in the sophisticated, professional area of AV production and staging. Communicating basic knowledge of directing actors and performances to display diverse emotional scenarios as a basic component of shooting a film. The fundamental ability to work with actors, to know the course of staging and be able to lead people creatively, to approach them and convey their own personal vision. As far as possible, the course takes place in cooperation with university (University Mozarteum) and private playhouses (Schauspielhaus – Elisabethbühne Salzburg), as well as drama schools.

Course contents:
In-depth knowledge and skills in content-related digital editing as a creative process. In-depth technical introduction to digital post-production as well as the software used, such as Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, Adobe AfterFX and NUKE. Focus on the combination of technical expertise, software handling and content-related work. Editing as a content-related, aesthetic form of expression. First introduction to the basics of colour correction and compositing.

Corporate Design

Conceptual design and general design of cross-media appearances in theory and practice. Design as an expression of corporate culture, behaviour and communication. Game Studies & Game Design 1

Course contents:
Communicating basic knowledge of technical and creative applications of cinematic software, such as Final Cut Pro or Avid Media. Communicating fundamental skills in digital film editing and its professional workflow from capturing/recording, creating and managing an editing project (format/frame rate/settings, etc.) to the professional playout of a film sequence at a professional standard; editing of short, previously produced digital film sequences, adverts or music videos. Communicating basic knowledge of artistic–aesthetic editing.

Photography Specialisation

Course contents:
Communicating the fundamentals and techniques of researching and contextualising image and text. The focus is on the special relationship between texts and images, the interesting interrelationship of which is to be seen in connection with communication, which is becoming more and more visually oriented. The relationship between the meaning of texts and images in the context of communication and art. The relationship between photographic image design and "textual" design. A picture is worth a thousand words, and one word can trigger thousands of images. The course ends with a photographic-textual presentation about a chosen subject.

Multimedia Project 1

Course contents:
Fundamental practice-oriented qualifications in a media-specific field (media design, computer animation, film or audio) on the basis of the students' individual interests and potentials by means of finding independent, problem-based solutions to a practical task applying differentiated basic knowledge and skills of the relevant selected area.

Audio Specialisation

Course contents:
Music and sound design using virtual instruments and studio technologies in communication with audio hardware. Conceptual design and preparation of small audio productions based on individual musical needs. Fundamental skills in dealing with recorders, wave and multi-track programmes. Presentation of musical and/ or audio-visual concepts and works.

Film & Studio Specialisation

Course contents:
Introduction to the basics of modern digital film design, from a technical as well as design point of view, by means of lecture elements that give an insight into the basics of cinematic techniques and design possibilities based on cinematic role models (e.g. films by Orson Welles or Stanley Kubrick), and teach the basic technical concepts of digital film technology such as white balance, focal lengths, etc. In addition, there are smaller practical exercise units. Introduction to camera and lighting technology using the example of digital film equipment specific to the university of applied sciences such as the digital video camera Sony EX 3 / Z7 or Panasonic HVX 200, as well as artificial (tungsten) light and natural light spotlights (HMI). Exercises using this equipment based on small cinematic assignments. Introduction to photocomposing (three-point lighting), mood lighting and camera movements. The course aims at implementing a small cinematic assignment on a professional level, from a both technical and design point of view.

3D Specialisation

Specialisation within the field of 3D animation and relevant tools. Advancement of skills in working with and creating computergenerated images and image sequences with enhanced focus on material, texture and basic rules and techniques for lighting and rendering.

Life Drawing and Modelling

Course contents:
Expanding the basic knowledge and skills in analogue design by means of communicating techniques of sketching, drawing and plastic modelling bodies, proportions and space. Developing an individual graphic or plastic style or expression. Research experiments using tools and materials to display the human body in certain positions, moods and spaces.

Course contents:
Experiencing the body as a medium and means of expression: communicating knowledge with regard to physical conditions of perception, as well as actively designing communication processes through body language, creative and/or social forms of (self-)presentation in real-time, stage presence, performance communication with the audience.

Produced Photography

Course contents:
Insights into photographic techniques based on examples from diverse photographic styles, such as advertising photography (Annie Leibowitz), fashion photography (David Chapelle), narrative photography (Simon Marsden), and architecture or product photography. Introduction to the basics of produced photography: handling diverse lenses (focal lengths – apertures – depths of field, relationship of aperture, exposure time, light sensitivity (ISO)), lighting, artificial light – natural light, pictorial composition and diverse photographic tonalities. Introduction to more complex digital photo equipment using the examples of Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Canon EOS 500. Introduction to the basics of analogue photography and basic differences compared to digital photography; introduction to basic creative principles of produced photography (framing, pictorial composition, movement in the photographic image, etc.); development of the students’ own photographic style. The course ends with the presentation of an independent small photo project based on a specified assignment.

Media Scenography 2

Course contents:
Advanced skills in implementing auditory and visual media techniques for 3D real or virtual environments, development and communication of multimedia space concepts, production of objects and spaces by means of sounds, lights, colours, images and interaction, specific applications for visitor and knowledge centres. Scenography in the context of film and TV productions, architecture, communication design and corporate environments. Discussing audio-visual installations taking into account aspects of art.

Photographic & Cinematic Documentation 2

Semester 4 | Academic year: 2 | Course code: MMAB4WD2IL | Type: IL | INTL-Code: 4 | SWS: 3 | ECTS-Credits: 3

Course contents:
Further differentiated expansion of technical and aesthetic knowledge and skills in dealing with digital and analogue SLR cameras: handling RAW data, analogue development, lighting, gradation, ISO handling, etc., and their professional workflow. Photographic and cinematic experimentation at a high technical level to be able to assess, explore and overcome limitations. The focus is on the implementation of photographic-cinematic conceptual designs. Further differentiation of technical-photographic skills and their targeted application to increase the aesthetic value of a photo/film concept. Creating a reflected awareness with regard to the combination of technical possibilities, reflections on the environment, and possible photographic–cinematic modes of expression. The range includes artistic auteur documentaries and photography, documentary essays, as well as reports and features oriented towards journalism, and mixed forms with fictional elements such as docudramas or docusoaps. Theoretical and practical work comprises the areas of research, exposé and treatment, interview and conversation techniques, scripts, direction, dramaturgy, cameras, lights, sound, editing, music and post-production. The course aims to educate authors and directors who work well in a team and learn how to creatively design reality using the students’ own ideas and responsible actions towards people and facts. The students should understand how to relate content to form. Technical professionalism should enable them to establish themselves on the multifaceted market – be it from a commercial or non-commercial point of view.

Character & Effects 2

Course contents:
Creation of character animations in different levels of difficulty. Application and expansion of knowledge from the "Animation Fundamentals" course for objects or in diverse animation tools by making use of character rigs created in the "Character & Effects 1" course. Creation of effects animations with the aid of various dynamics technologies such as cloth simulation, particle simulation, n particles, fluid dynamics; deepening and expansion of knowledge of rendering technologies of the various types of effects.

Digital Visual Effects

Semester 4 | Academic year: 2 | Course code: MMAB4DVEIL | Type: IL | INTL-Code: 4 | SWS: 2 | ECTS-Credits: 2

Course contents:
Communicating links between 3D animations and live-action movies. Understanding techniques such as 3D tracking, match moving, green/bluebox recordings, etc. is meant to help students learn how to integrate 3D elements into live-action movies, and vice versa. Building on the "Compositing" course, advanced techniques and design possibilities are analysed as well as developed and implemented based on practical examples. Analysis of compression methods, camera systems, post-production workflows, phenomena of image steadiness and implications on visual effects production.

Course contents:
Specific in-depth knowledge and communication skills (presentation techniques for English-speaking audiences, interaction with English-speaking colleagues) and the ability to understand very complicated texts (writing complex texts with content from the area of specialisation, understanding manuals, software and special concepts of continuing education, writing texts with a descriptive character (concepts, documentaries), commercial correspondence).

3D Animation 2

Course contents:
Specific in-depth knowledge in the area of 3D animation; planning, production and presentation of a 3D animation project; combination of 3D animation/graphics with the areas of graphics/motion design/video/audio. Expanding specific knowledge in the areas of lighting and rendering by making use of advanced technologies and rendering tools. Production support for the Qualification Project 2.

Course contents:
Specific knowledge of approaches in music analysis and composition with a focus on sound design in the media field (music for film, video, interactive applications etc...), the different stylistic, compositional and instrumentation techniques, as well as the characteristics of modern styles of the 20th century. Specific skills in designing harmony, melody, rhythm and instrumentation. Examination of musical manifestations in specific areas (electronic music and computer-based music products as a link to current music practice).

Sound Synthesis 2

Course contents:
Specific knowledge of aesthetic principles of specific musical trends. Specific skills in the conceptual design and combination of sound modules, and the creation of the students’ own tools with a focus on the sound aesthetics desired. Expansion of skills in individual module combinations on various platforms (virtual and hardware synthesiser as well as effects).

Soundscapes for Games

Course contents:
Fundamental differentiation between linear and interactive soundscapes. Definition of sound, sound design, soundscape and soundscape design in the context of games. Approaches to interactive soundscape design. Fundamental knowledge of specific problems of interactive soundscape generation. Dealing with soundscape design and Fmod-Designer software.

Advertising Film

Semester 4 | Academic year: 2 | Course code: MMAB4WFIIL | Type: IL | INTL-Code: 4 | SWS: 1,5 | ECTS-Credits: 3

Course contents:
Step-by-step introduction to the realisation of advertising films. Campaign thinking in integrated cross-media communication is specially promoted. The educational programme also functions as a "laboratory" for new, innovative thinking. After communicating basic knowledge of the advertising industry and its special characteristics, known formats, lengths and points of view should be subjected to critical analysis, and room for new and especially provocative staging concepts and ideas is to be allowed. The multiple benefits of a film are becoming increasingly important in times of tight budgets. Not only 30-second versions for television, but also Internet versions, trade show movies or commercial films, or even transmissions of individual ideas or entire movies to other media are gaining more and more importance. The course ends with the students’ own advertising film project (often in cooperation with the free market), which is submitted to international competitions at student advertising film festivals.

Course contents:
Communicating specific direction knowledge and skills. Focus on the combination of individual components relevant to film (camera work, directed lighting, directing actors, material/ script adaptations, procedures at the set) for the realisation of the students’ own individual digital film project. The Direction course teaches students how to further develop their creative and organisational skills in the areas of narrative films as well as other genres. Special emphasis is placed on cooperation in creative teams when it comes to finding material, the development of implementation concepts, casting and cooperation with actors. The course creates a close link between theory and practice, and aims at combining and applying traditional directing techniques in the context of multimedia realisation.

Course contents:
Expanding script writing skills from a formal as well as content point of view according to film industry standards. Expanding skills in cinematic dramaturgy, writing dialogues, writing scripts and cinematic storytelling in various formats. The students examine various film genres in different scenarios, which gives them an insight into both the classic genres and narrative structures and modern narrative forms that emerged as a result of various newly established presentation platforms such as the Internet or mobile phones, and offer the possibility to break up traditional narrative structures.

Course contents:
Conceptual design, general design and prototypical implementation of interactive applications. Brand and media-appropriate design. In-depth knowledge and skills in user-centred/experience design and responsive web design. Advanced knowledge and skills in the conceptual design and general design of complex visualisation strategies and their implementation using generative digital tools. Supporting the development of an online portfolio.

Game Studies & Game Design 2

Course contents:
In-depth knowledge as regards designing and creating board games to develop a technical basis in the areas of feature design and game balancing. Expansion of the competencies in digital interactive storytelling with the aid of existing solutions and popular techniques from the industry, as well as development of new methods or solutions. Further expanding the ability to develop conceptual designs in the area of application and development of gameplay mechanisms in game design. In-depth examination of the subject of games in a context relevant to culture, the monetary system, society and education.

Multimedia Project 2

Semester 4 | Academic year: 2 | Course code: MMAB4MPAPT | Type: PT | INTL-Code: 4 | SWS: 1 | ECTS-Credits: 4

Course contents:
Independently selecting a task and possible a team taking into account individual potentials and team-oriented potentials, time limits and the use as an application for internships; independently carrying out the project from conceptual design to implementation, coaching, and the presentation of the finished project to colleagues and lecturers of the degree programme and possible companies offering internships.
