The LAB provides students with the possibility of deepening their knowledge of wood chemistry by carrying out a multistage extraction process as well as using FT-IR spectro analysis.

Workshop programme:
First workshop day: introduction into the field of extraction (theotretical background). Subsequently you carry out a multistage extraction process based on wood samples (sawdust); build up a Soxhlet extractor and extract the first stage. While extraction stage 1 is being carried out, you receive an introduction into the field of spectrometry. You learn how to use the FT-IR spectrometer.

In the afternoon: practice units – you carry out several spectrometric analysis, eg. based on solid wood samples, cellulose, lignin sulphate, tannin extracts and terpenes. Afterwards you finalize the first extraction stage.
Second workshop day: you carry out a synthesis, turning lignin sulphonic into vanillin. Afterwards you measure the spectrum of the synthetic substances you obtained using the FT-IR spectrometer. Additionally you continue the multistage extraction process (second solvent). After finalizing the extraction process you apply a Rotavapor and calculate the overall level of organic extract substances and then analyse them using spectral analysis (tannin etc.).
