Lecture content:

The lecture provides an overview of all features of wood relating to grading and application as well giving students information about the so called wood defects. The course also includes an introduction to animal and plant pests which can infest wood. In addition to the presentation of wood characteristics, their influences on sorting and their limitating effect on application, also possible causes for their emergence are discussed. The following characteristics are important elements in the course: Dimensions and rules of wood scales (Holzvermessung); Knots; Tapering; Annual ring width; Stem form (crookedness, excentricity, ovality, ...); Reaction wood (tension wood, compression wood); Checks, tension; Resin pockets, discolouration, ...; Official grading documents (ÖHU, EN, ...) The conditions and preconditions for pest infestation are described in addition to the typology of the most frequent pests and their habitat. With this lecture the students should gain an overview of the possibilities of wood grading and application. With their knowledge of harmful organisms, they are capable of determining necessary measures e.g. relating to wood protection for timber used in construction. The following aspects are emphasised: Abiotic damage (UV-rays, weathering, ...) Biotic damage; Fungi (Hausfäulen, soft-rot fungus, Blättlinge, ...); Insects (longicorn, Nagekäfer, Holzwespe, termites, ...), Mussels; Potentially dangerous areas and their avoidance

The project encompasses a complex task relating to a theme of the field of specialisation, which can only be carried out and completed in group project work. Wood Constructions Main Option/Specialisation: Draft of a building considering the requirements of the specific location and including basic mechanical services. The project work encompasses a detailed analysis of the various factors necessary to the task and demands that students focus on a highly complex construction project, which includes solving spatial, strategic, contextual and design problems and applying the correct structural physical methods. Forest Products Technology Main Option/Specialisation: The task is to plan and evaluate various processing and material options in the forest products industry by analysing and integrating technological, economic and social aspects. The project is carried out in close cooperation with companies and therefore promotes professional growth. The contents of scientific and technical lectures, as well as those of project management are essential in fulfilling the aims of the project. Furniture and Interior Design Main Option/Specialisation: Draft of an interior or a piece of furniture for a specific building area or room, including basic functional demands. The main tasks relate to the various aspects of the draft, the planning and the model making. Spatial, strategic and contextual factors are determined and evaluated regarding the production and application of the object or design.

The responsibility of each individual for his/her future, the following generations; the triad of economy-ecology-social responsibility - the holistic approach, international requirements: IPPC, climate conferences and treaties; the Kyoto Protocol; measures. The role of (national) politics: conversion of international regulations on a national level, demands on the citizen and the economy. The role of the individual; the role of the company; sustainability in product development; the triad "forestry-woods-timber", an example of sustainable development: the role of the forestry and forest products industry in climate discussions.
