Lecture content:

The different problem-solving strategies of product, furniture and interior design are demonstrated and run through in three separate, thematically independent project topics. The students specialising in interior design find creative solutions to simple tasks as stipulated in the topic and present these whilst utilising first-hand theoretical and methodological knowledge in sketches, illustrations and models. The individual approaches to drafts are adjusted according to the requirements of the different scales - from the object, to interiors and buildings, to cityscapes - of these approaches and also seen in relation to the corresponding cultural context. In the projects of the furniture and industrial design specialisations, the students must clearly differentiate semantic aspects of drafts explicitly from formal, aesthetic aspects, recognise how their significance affects the design realisation process and be able to apply them in a function-oriented manner. The target audience, their cultural roots and their expectations of the product are central points of reference for shaping a draft, and these background aspects are mapped out accordingly through appropriate research. The various usage aspects of the product draft that needs to be established are incorporated into the drafting process right from the beginning. Special requirements in industrial and furniture design of technique, anthropometry, utilisation of materials, tailoring to the brand and production are engaged with uniquely in the specialisation projects. The students predominantly organise the course of the design project themselves. Alongside the draft result itself, coherent communication, on the basis of a clearly comprehensible line of argument supported by visual elements, is a central mission within this course.

Design 4

Module description:

Alongside the sustainability aspects that naturally have to be taken into account from the module Design 3, from this semester on the design skills of the graduates include the development and rendering of an original, outside-the-box design process as an expression and central USP of a competitive designer. In particular the following skill acquisition goals also apply to graduates in their own specialist fields: Furniture Design The graduates are capable of developing furniture of relative complexity methodically, analytically and creatively and substantiating this in drafts by incorporating their basic knowledge of construction, technology and understanding of materials. The draft for the furniture is primarily seen in the context of target audience and brand, whereby the development of brand-related content based on elements of the specific corporate design provisions makes up an important part of the solution-building skills that have to be demonstrated by the graduates. Moreover they understand how to independently select the appropriate media for representing the arrangement of all stages of the path to the solution. Interior Design The graduates can develop interior assignments of relative complexity methodically, analytically and creatively. The resultant interior concepts are established with regard to the needs and expectations of the various predictable user groups and important drafting goals such as store branding strategies, enactment, user guidance and point of sales communication aspects are substantiated in the form of draft plans whilst taking their basic knowledge of construction, technology and understanding of materials into account. Moreover the graduates are capable of independently selecting the appropriate media for representing the typological and constructive mediation of the draft solution. Industrial Design The graduates are capable of tackling relatively complex tasks in product design methodically, analytically and creatively. Alongside obvious development aspects such as construction, technology and knowledge of materials, answering questions of social relevance of the product to be developed is recognised as a core component of the drafting process to be performed, and is incorporated into the design solution. The draft is primarily seen in the context of target audience and brand, whereby the development of brand-related content based on elements of the specific corporate design provisions makes up an important part of the solution-building skills that have to be demonstrated by the graduates. The increasing professionalisation of the graduates is shown in the flawless rendering of all stages of the design process whilst independently taking suitable representation media into account.

Applied Product Management - Business Plan

Semester 6
Academic year 3
Course code DPMB6BACIL
Type IL
Kind Compulsory
Language of instruction German
SWS 1
ECTS Credits 2

Lecture content:

In this course, the students obtain the skills to strategically build up companies and to practise consistently planned management in the long term. The first topic session is directed at the discussion of the project's relevance and the market potential of the brand concepts that have been developed, which is summarised in an executive summary. Furthermore, the students are taught the necessity and significance of analysing all internal and external corporate factors, which hones their understanding of self and external images. In order to deduce logical and relevant aspects and to form a foundation for a sound strategy, another major focus of attention is on the formulation of a conclusion of the analysis, which is intended to round off the professional fields in strategic marketing. The other measures for implementing operative marketing content are grounded in a purposefully structured marketing mix in the final lecture sessions, which is intended to also teach students core content about project management.

Superior module:

Bachelorthesis 2

Module description:

The graduates can independently perform all the steps in the design process that are necessary for creating a product. They are capable of independently researching a relevant problem, defining the user groups that correspond to it and summarising their statements in a design briefing. All content aspects are unified in the design solution based on this empirical element, from sustainability in function, construction and production to aesthetic and symbolic, semantic effects. The draft also takes economic and social interests into equal consideration and functions as proof of the fact that the graduates understand that their responsibility as designers is not only to take commercial interests into account. This means that the draft result is also understood as a solution to a problem that is integrated into a service concept whose effectiveness extends beyond the purely physical or technical task.

Lecture content:

The students obtain a basic knowledge of target audience-oriented communication technique, potential presentation platforms of brand values and corporate identities. A well-grounded knowledge of the transmission of emotions is conveyed in theoretical and practical sessions and an understanding of presentation diversity is strengthened. Both verbal and non-verbal communication forms are to be taught to the students in order to be able to create effective and long term ties between customers and brand environments, which is strongly reflected in USP.

Superior module:

Methodologies 6

Module description:

The graduates can form, analyse, assess and reflect on a coherent picture of their surroundings which are relevant for the task. They have a knowledge of the fields of design, testing, project and quality management. They can present the digital and analogue developments of their drafts as homogeneous compositions and present them appropriately. The graduates are capable of integrating a complex collection of a company's pre-defined core values into a holistic communication policy and thus successfully portraying a targeted overall impression of a brand. They develop coherent brand scripts and a strategic media mix whilst taking their basic knowledge of marketing and branding into account and are able to render and check these.

Follow-up Seminar on Bachelor Thesis 2

Semester 6
Academic year 3
Course code DPMB6BACSE
Type SE
Kind Bachelor thesis
Language of instruction German
SWS 2
ECTS Credits 11
Examination character immanent

Lecture content:

The students are familiar with the subject area of their chosen topic in the form of in-depth knowledge of relevant theories and relevant academic discourses. They are aware of a broad range of methodologies and use them adequately to answer their question. Products, media and the services to be included within these are designed according to professional points of view and with the knowledge and application of contemporary technologies and design methods. The object of the course is therefore the conceptualisation, structuring, study methodology and the final validation of the design. A properly substantial presentation and defence of the work content is a constituent component of this course.
