Course Title: Visual Communication & Project

Observation: Visual Communication and Visual Communication & Project are offered together and cannot be taken separately (you cannot take Visual Communication Project without having done Visual Communication Course)
Course Contents: Visual communication in connection with an actual design process along a project topic in either Furniture or Industrial Design.

Course Title: Brand Design Development (Project)

Number of Credits: 7,5 ECTS
Course Contents: In small groups you work on an interdisciplinary project in the area of brand design development: marketing, product management, brand creation and brand staging. You develop your own brand concepts including strategy and design under the continuing support of a trainer. In this course you learn how to ensure successful project management, which are the most important factors for success in a well planned brand development process, and how to improve your design skills (models, sketches, presentation techniques).

Course Contents: Design of a product based on an expanded basic process; accompanying consolidation of representation methods, presentation and documentation in technical English terminology.

Course Title: International Design Workshop

Course Contents: Development of project content in interdisciplinary teams on the basis of a comprehensive subject area - The teams are interculturally made up of students and lecturers from the network of partner universities - Consideration of cultural influences on the communication and design processes - Presentation of the developed content and reflection.

Course Title: Project Management 1

Course Contents:  The students are capable of organising and managing projects. The course includes content such as project planning and project management, as well as types of project, requirements of project managers and team members, and requirement specifications.

Course Title: Service Design

Course Contents: Graphic Design Project is a hands on class teaching visual communication skills through a variety of , group activities exercises and lectures. It focuses on a project in the field of Corporate Design and integrates the competencies of a wide range of student skill sets. The unit will explore the basic principles of visual communication, theoretically (in the lectures) and practically (through a group project consisting of several small individual activities, leading towards a single major outcome). During the lectures, students will learn a range of techniques for graphic design, along with being shown recent examples of well implemented design strategies, in order to learn about processes and methods of operation. This unit is suitable for both beginner and advanced capabilities.

Course Contents: Image and Text - beyond illustration: In the context of graphic design, images and text are usually reserved for representation and illustration. A text provides written information, images provide visual information. At best, these elements may be graphically manipulated to serve their illustrative purposes, but what happens when the context of an image is changed through the use of text? We will be exploring the many possibilities of combining image and text. The first half of the semester will be brain-storming, collecting and talking about the aesthetics of text, language, symbolism and their relationship specifically to photography. The second half of the semester will be dedicated to personal projects, fom their conception to completion by the end of the semester.

Course Contents: Introducing yourself and others in formal business situations – clarity, accuracy and verbal self-confidence. Frequently used design terminology, writing a CV. Formulating product descriptions – practice in the use of adjectives and adverbs. Comparing and contrasting room layout. Reading and listening comprehensions about contemporary British culture – describing modern buildings and innovative design.

Course Contents: Describing a company, the language of presentations, differentiating between various styles using authentic material e.g. company literature, advertising material, technical instructions. The use of the passive voice in formal technical and scientific descriptions. Vocabulary exercises relating to the forest products industry and advanced business English. Students prepare general conversation topics using relevant phrases.

Course Contents: Interview questions and answers – clarity, accuracy and verbal self-confidence. Frequently used technical terminology, introducing yourself in formal business situations. Comparing and contrasting business and technical processes.

Course Title: Cambridge Advanced English 1

Language Level: C1 (CEFR)
Course Contents: Exercises to help students develop high-level skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as training students’ word power. Therefore there are regular detailed vocabulary exercises relating to specific themes, including idioms and phrases, all of which are practised in conversation. Grammar is also a focal point, whereby students are expected to have Cambridge First Certificate level knowledge of grammar before enrolling on this course.  Grammar training is in the form of refresher exercises covering aspects such as tenses, prepositions, the passive voice, indirect speech etc. Students will be required to practice writing skills and revise and consolidate their knowledge of register and style by writing letters, reports, articles and summaries.

Course Title: Social Hackaton

Course Contents: The Objective of the Hackathon is to develop ideas and first protoypes for digital projects and present them to a Jury on the last day.

Course Contents:  The course combines the elements image, text and sound and should increase students’ creativity and deepen their technical understanding when using different communication tools. They should be able to achieve a higher quality of their productions as well as develop their competencies for using media and presentation tools. Students should expand their design repertoire in marketing, communication and public relations.

Course Contents: This unit combines lectures and exercises that aim to teach graphical design to students with varying levels of expertise. The lectures and discussions are orientated towards students learning new processes and methods in order to build their graphical language, through individual and group exercises that explore a range of industry relevant and experimental strategies for building a contemporary visual identity. The self directed project component will allow students to achieve this in a way that is relevant to their practical interests.

Course Title: Understanding Austrian Culture & Society

Course contents: The course aims to provide background information and first-hand experience of the Austrian culture and way of life. A historical and contemporary perspective serves as basis for this analysis. After an historical, political and geographical introduction, students will get particular insight on the various influences that impacted the Austrian society and its cultural and national identity. Students will constantly reflect on their experiences and become aware of their own cultural conditioning. Values, traditions, customs and Austria’s culture in general will be explored in class discussions, interwiewing native Austrians and  by participating in excursions.

Course Title: Effective Communicatin in Multicultural Teams

Course Contents: The Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (FHS) aims to develop students’ social competence by integrating teamwork and project work in its curriculum. Social competence, particularly in working in and with multicultural teams is a skill-set that is highly valued in the workplace. In this course, students will be introduced to the general concepts of communication, group dynamics and team role theory with special focus on the impact of culture and how to deal with the challenges of working in a multicultural environment. The dimensions will be discussed through reflective activities and case studies to help students increase self-awareness and awareness of “others” and manage cross-cultural situations effectively. Actual experiences of the participants with regards to working with “local” and “international” colleagues will be discussed and reflected to support their successful integration in the FHS structure and culture.
