At the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences we offer three degree programmes focusing on design, media and art. As an international student you can choose from all three degree programmes. MultiMediaArt focuses on computeranimation, media design, film and audio.

Graphic Design Project (7,5 ECTS)
Graphic Design Project is a hands on class teaching visual communication skills through a variety of , group activities exercises and lectures. It focuses on a project in the field of Corporate Design and integrates the competencies of a wide range of student skill sets. The unit will explore the basic principles of visual communication, theoretically (in the lectures) and practically (through a group project consisting of several small individual activities, leading towards a single major outcome). During the lectures, students will learn a range of techniques for graphic design, along with being shown recent examples of well implemented design strategies, in order to learn about processes and methods of operation. This unit is suitable for both beginner and advanced capabilities.
Photography in Context (7,5 ECTS)
Image and Text - beyond illustration: In the context of graphicdesign, images and text are usually reserved for representation and illustration. A text provides written information, images provide visual information. At best, these elements may be graphically manipulated to serve their illustrative purposes, but what happens when the context of an image is changed through the use of text? We will be exploring the many possibilities of combining image and text. The first half of the semester will be brain-storming, collecting and talking about the aesthetics of text, language, symbolism and their relationship specifically to photography. The second half of the semester will be dedicated to personal projects, form their conception to completion by the end of the semester.
Concept Development (4 ECTS, only wintersemester)
Concept development focuses on the use of creative techniques to solve real problems by the use of multimedia/crossmedia communication campaigns, installations and/or artworks. In the centre there is always a problem or mindset that has to be changed or a message, that has to be communicated. Using those creative techniques, partly coming from advertising as well as art, philosophy and design, communication strategies which reach the target audience are developed. The course consists of a lecture part, which shows diverse creative techniques and campaigns and a practical part/excercise, where students work in groups on real problems, creating actual communication strategies which will be presented in a professional way.

Music and language, popular styles and authors, development in pop music from the mid-20th century and socio-cultural backgrounds. Specific approaches (parameter mapping) in the field of interaction between signal sound and audio-visual installations. Professional knowledge of all common post-production possibilities within a TV production, of the workflows in different multimedia TV productions and the ability to analyse, evaluate and optimise them during operation. Sophisticated technical and creative skills in the solution of creative challenges in the on-air field, in the planning and implementation of workflows in a multimedia post-production context on a state-of-the-art technological level using modern post-production software as well as editing and cutting systems. The focus is on the advanced intensification of technical skills and creative work with post-production software in the field of motion images and its various genres and forms.

Building on the previous course: Highly specialised knowledge of the handling of innovative rendering & lighting technologies and the analysis of natural phenomena. Professional skills in the independent development of shaders, in the creation of custom solutions, in the sophisticated capturing of natural phenomena, in the autonomous implementation in shader languages, in the professional handling of lighting situations and technologies, in the creation of temporally-optimised workflows by means of layering / passes including the understanding and adequate use of current file formats. Focused autonomous exercises: with 3rd party renderers, atmospheric effects and lighting situations, reproduction of camera effects and errors, optimisation of the ex-actness of simulation, optimisation of render workflows regarding speed and quality, combination of different solutions and packages along optimal quality and speed workflows.

Focused knowledge of the methods and tools for the real-time creation, control and processing of sounds with the aid of electronic man-machine interfaces as well as correlating forms of expres-sion in the field of intuitive and emotional interfaces: Sensor and actuator technology in the con-text of media applications ranging from web to room installations as well as their meaningfulness in connection with parameters of generative sound creation and manipulation. Traceability and usabil-ity of interfaces between amateurishness and virtuosity. Gestures, haptics and visual feedback. Historical development of analogue instruments up to electronic and digital interfaces. Basic theo-retical background information concerning the challenges of man-machine interaction as well as questions of aesthetics.

Sophisticated knowledge of the effects of acoustic phenomena (incl. assessing the acoustic char-acteristics of spaces in relation to their use for installations or events, using acoustic phenomena in the context of art, discussing acoustic phenomena using case studies etc.). Professional knowledge and skills for reducing or avoiding unwanted faults, i.e. practical knowledge relating to the perception of acoustic information: Stereophony (reflections, reverberations, absorption, res-onance, sound proofing). Specific creative skills in the conception and implementation of TV and multimedia productions as well as on air set design in a multimedia context (virtual and real): design for the appearance of new shows or re-launches of existing formats, showing brands on the screen and all other digital platforms, creative brief (on air, audio, web and set designer, fashion and styling, film and post-productions, direction).
