Digital meets didactics: One year of FH Salzburg Learning Studio

One year ago, the innovative Didactics and Learning Technologies Studio (DLT Studio) opened its doors at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences - a milestone that paved the way for innovative, media-supported teaching. The fully automated Learning Studio, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and five versatile stations, enables lecturers, staff and students to produce high-quality teaching content using the ‘one-button’ principle.

At the heart of the studio are five workstations - from a professional green screen setup and the interactive Learning Glass to classic PC and podcast/screencast options. This variety enables users to switch flexibly between formats during a recording and thus effectively combine multimedia content - whether for preparatory or follow-up processes. The ease of use and high level of usability have particularly impressed people with no prior technical knowledge, making the studio a key tool in modern university teaching.

Wide-ranging and innovative teaching and learning concepts

The  Didactics and Learning Technologies Team is proud of how well the studio is being used. Project manager Lionel Aßhauer: "A number of projects and innovative formats have been realised. We support users in using the studio and cater to specific requirements." The positive response proves that the studio has not only changed the technological standard, but also the didactic approach at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.

In addition, internal and external lecturers receive didactic support with a wide range of programmes in the field of university didactics. The ‘Didactics and Learning Technologies Lobby’ - DLT Lobby for short - also provides a brief and compact insight into specific teaching and learning scenarios and international collaborations. Teachers present tried and tested teaching concepts in 15 to 30 minutes and share their experiences. This allows a dialogue to take place and new ideas to be developed. A current example is the business game ‘Entrepreneurship’ (more information on myfhs - internal)

One ‘click’ to a multimedia teaching format

The main aim of the studio is the simple creation of teaching content. Above all, there are areas of application for dynamic learning environments, such as the ‘inverted classroom’ concept, where ‘traditional’ teaching is reversed: students work through the basics independently using digital learning materials such as videos or online modules. The valuable classroom time is then used for in-depth discussions, practical applications and individual support, making learning more effective and interactive.

The stations in the Leaning Studio at a glance:

  • Presentation station with green screen with various layouts for camera and presentation
  • Learning Glass: glass whiteboard that allows recording with eye contact
  • Wacom board with the option of digital drawing for screencasts
  • Laying technique: ‘document camera’ for laying technique videos and analogue drawings
  • Podcast recordings

The studio can be used by all teaching staff and FH Salzburg employees from all departments as well as by students as part of teaching-related projects.

Podcast recommendations:
The two regular podcasts are produced in the studio: “A Life Abroad” from the International Office Team and “Health-Talk" from the Department Health Sciences.
