What we call ‘normal’ is rarely a matter of coincidence. The exhibition ‘On Ideology’ at designforum Wien reveals the power structures embedded in the design of our living environments. Ideology manifests itself not only as a belief, but as lived practice – in our everyday, designed environment, in images, objects and systems, in routines, habits, and in what is unquestioned and taken for granted. It shapes perception, judgement and action long before conscious decisions are made.

designaustria and communication design students on the MultiMediaArt course at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences invite viewers to decipher the codes of everyday life and reflect on their own perspectives. Experimental works create moments of disorientation that open up new ways of interpreting reality. There seems to be no escape from ideology – yet its effects leave traces that become visible and thus open to negotiation.
