For the third time, the Timber Technology & Timber Construction degree programme at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences proved that sustainability, specialist practice and a spirit of adventure go together perfectly: This year's cycling excursion took seven students, led by Senior Lecturer Günter Berger, on a five-day trip through the Austrian timber industry - and all by bike.

320 kilometres, 2,500 metres in altitude, 9 businesses - 1 vision
The tour started at the Kuchl campus and travelled via Lofer, Jenbach and Innsbruck to Imst - with a crowning finale at the Stelvio Pass. Nine innovative companies in the timber industry were visited, including industry giants such as EGGER Group, Binderholz, Pfeifer Group and medium-sized flagship companies such as Meiberger Holzbau and Neuschmied Holz GmbH. The students were given exclusive insights into production processes, corporate philosophies and international markets - always accompanied by committed graduates who shared their career paths and experiences.

Sustainability meets network
The excursion was more than just a sporting challenge: it was a living example of sustainable mobility, interdisciplinary dialogue and practical teaching. ‘This trip broadens horizons and creates opportunities,’ says initiator and lecturer Günter Berger.
The sustainable cycling excursion was already honoured with the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences award for special teaching formats in 2023. In 2025, too, it is clear that this format is a complete success - professionally, personally and ecologically. The excitement for a continuation in 2026 is already noticeable.
