Creating Fair AI: A Tool for Gender-Sensitive Processes

Gender-Responsive AI: Why We Need New Perspectives in Artificial Intelligence Development

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping our everyday lives, our working world and business decision-making processes. Yet whilst AI systems are being used more and more frequently, one key problem persists: gender-specific biases and discrimination are often not adequately addressed in the development and integration of AI.

Women* remain under-represented in many areas of AI development. As a result, important perspectives are missing that are necessary to identify biases at an early stage and to design fair, inclusive technologies.

The consequences can be far-reaching: from biased recommendation systems and discriminatory decision-making processes to AI applications that reinforce existing social inequalities. At the same time, there is a growing need for AI literacy – that is, an understanding of how AI works, the risks it poses, and how it can be used responsibly.

This is precisely where the ‘Designing AI Fairly’ project comes in. Building on an existing digital tool for ethical reflection on AI processes, we are specifically integrating gender-specific aspects and expanding the tool to cover new areas of application and target groups.
