Lights, camera, action: Salzburg University of Applied Sciences opens new film production hall

Since the beginning of October, the new film production hall has been offering more space for cinematic visions. Covering almost 450 m², the facility in Salzburg Schallmoos will provide students from the Creative Technologies department with ideal conditions for realising their creative film projects.

With an investment of €260,000, Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is underlining its role as a centre of innovation and creativity and setting new standards for film education in Austria.

"The production hall – originally a photo studio – has been extensively adapted and equipped with innovative technology. It is a central location that combines production facilities and technology for the approximately 30 film productions that are created each year," says Hilmar Linder, head of the Creative Technologies department, summarising the advantages of the new production hall.

A milestone for the film location Salzburg

‘With the new production hall, we are creating an infrastructure for our students that is otherwise only found in a professional environment,’ says Till Fuhrmeister, Head of the MultiMediaArt programme. ‘Here they can realise their cinematic visions and work under real production conditions – from technology and set construction to team organisation. This not only enhances the quality of our work, but also strengthens Salzburg as a film location in the long term.’

State-of-the-art equipment for professional film projects

In the production hall, students work with high-quality ARRI Cine cameras, powerful film lights and LED lighting systems. Professional motion systems such as dollies, camera cranes, Steadicams and Easy Rigs, as well as a motorised truss system, open up new possibilities for dynamic lighting and camera movements. Thanks to an electronic locking system and 24/7 access, students can work flexibly and implement shooting schedules efficiently.

In addition to technical equipment, the hall offers a drive-in temporary storage facility for outdoor shoots, meeting rooms and production offices. A kitchen provides catering for the film crews, a make-up room for actors and a workshop for set construction complete the infrastructure.

Film education at the highest international level

Every year, around 30 film productions are created at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in the areas of short films, commercials and music films. Around 80 students in the film department are supervised by experienced teachers from the industry, including cameraman Bernhard Jasper (Die Schule der magischen Tiere) and camerawoman Carmen Treichl (recently awarded the German Camera Prize).

Recent successes include the internationally award-winning commercial ‘The USB Paradox’ by young director Jonas Perkmann and the Best Student Film award at the renowned One Screen Short Film Festival in New York for filmmakers Lea Povacz and Hanna Chucholowius.

Alumni include renowned filmmakers such as director Daniel Hoesl (Veni Vidi Vici), screenwriter Greta Heinemann (Navy CIS, Good Girls), producer Verena Puhm (Dream Lab LA) and cinema director Anna Unterweger (Broke. Alone. A Kinky Love Story).
