Moving images are everywhere these days. Good stories are not. The Film programme at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is for people who think in images — and want to learn how to use them to create films, adverts, visual concepts and new moving-image formats.
Anyone wishing to study film today needs to be able to do more than just operate technical equipment. It’s about a question that is becoming increasingly important: Why does a story stick in your mind? Why does an image have an impact? Why does someone keep watching?
During your degree, you will develop ideas, construct stories and bring them to life on screen: through directing, cinematography, lighting, sound, editing, post-production and visual design. The foundation remains the classic craft of filmmaking: story, dramaturgy, staging, camerawork, lighting, acting, editing and sound.
Added to this are the fields in which moving images are currently expanding: advertising films, social media spots, digital platforms, streaming, games, brand communication, virtual production, immersive formats and AI-supported workflows.
The Film specialisation within the MultiMediaArt Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes combines Cinema, Creative Technologies and Future Media. Not just as buzzwords, but as a course of study in which ideas are developed, tested, filmed, edited, presented and brought to public attention.
The aim: a portfolio of real projects — works that demonstrate what you can narrate, design, film, develop and complete.

Moving images are everywhere today: in cinemas, on TikTok, in advertising campaigns, TV series, games, music videos, immersive spaces and AI-generated visual worlds. The challenge is no longer simply to create images. The challenge is to create images that evoke a response. This is precisely where our specialisation in film comes in. We do not train people to be mere tool users. We train visual storytellers: people who can recognise ideas, develop scenes, design visuals and take responsibility for projects. AI, virtual production and new technologies are transforming film production. They speed up research, previsualisation, prototyping and post-production. But they do not replace timing, taste, dramaturgy, acting, lighting, rhythm and artistic judgement.
The future does not belong to those who produce images the fastest. It belongs to those who know why a story needs to be told — and how to translate it into a powerful film format. Film combines traditional filmmaking craftsmanship with the possibilities of digital and AI-supported moving-image production. Students work on short films, adverts, story worlds, director’s interpretations, prototypes and final-year projects. They do not just learn how to start projects. They learn how to see them through to completion.
Lights, camera, action: our new film production hall
Since autumn 2025, students in the Creative Technologies department have had access to a state-of-the-art film production hall on the Salzburg Schallmoos campus. The approximately 450 m² hall offers practical production conditions that are otherwise only found in professional studios. The hall offers:
- Modern technology: High-quality cameras (ARRI), lighting systems (LED & spotlights) and movement systems such as dollies, camera cranes and Steadicams enable professional film productions.
- Flexible production areas: Spacious rooms, production offices, meeting rooms, workshop for set construction, make-up and kitchen area for crews.
- Access & infrastructure: Electronic locking system with 24/7 access, accessible temporary storage for outdoor shoots.
- Practical work: Around 30 film productions per year, approx. 80 students work in a practical environment under the guidance of experienced teachers.
The new production hall supports practical training in the field of film and media and promotes cooperation between students, teachers and industry partners. With high-quality production conditions and modern workspaces, students are optimally prepared for the demands of the creative industry.
