Testing statistical software presents unique challenges. Developers often play the role of testers, formal training in software quality assurance may be limited, and time for systematic testing is constrained. In this talk, I will explore how principles from Design of Experiments (DOE) can be used to create more efficient and effective testing strategies for statistical software. By treating the construction of test cases as a designed experiment, we can systematically explore complex input spaces, uncover subtle bugs, and gain more insight from a smaller number of test runs.
I will share practical examples showing how statistical thinking can be applied to software testing, including combinatorial strategies and approaches for identifying failure modes. The goal is to highlight how DOE can bring structure and efficiency to the testing process.
